Now add in your choice of three transmissions – a sporty 6-speed manual, an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic with Manual Mode or a Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) – each one individually matched to an exclusively designed variation of Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD. The overall result is an engineering philosophy executed to perfection.
Engine
   
  To build such a high-performing vehicle, Subaru started with a near perfect idea. Take the ideally balanced SUBARU BOXER engine as an example: Its horizontally opposed configuration sees its pistons placed 180 degrees apart, creating a flatter and lower profile – and a lower centre of gravity – as compared to other engine types. As the pistons lay flat on either side of the crankshaft, they thrust away from each other along the horizontal plane. This punch-counterpunch action naturally suppresses engine vibration for inherently smoother running. With an ideally balanced SUBARU BOXER engine and symmetrical full-time AWD at the core of Subaru technology, every Subaru has something in common with no other vehicle.

Transmission
 
  The ideal link between the smooth power of the SUBARU BOXER engine and the confident control of Subaru symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive is the Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). This production-car first - a CVT longitudinally paired with AWD that uses a chain instead of a belt - allows for a near infinite selection of gear ratios, keeping the engine in the most favourable rpm range at all times. This advanced transmission is mated to a multi-plate transfer clutch AWD system that maintains a 60/40 torque split (front/rear) and automatically adjusts up to a 50/50 split under hard acceleration. The Lineartronic CVT (which is standard on Legacy 2.5i Convenience Package and 2.5i Limited Package and available on 2.5i and 2.5i Sport Package) is also specifically tuned to provide a more natural feel than other designs for instant response on demand with minimal application of the accelerator pedal. Paddle shifters also provide a 6-step manual mode for quick response on demand.  
     
Suspension
     
  The all-new Legacy's strut-type front suspension features a highly rigid Cradle Mount System, a wider track and longer wheel travel while the new double-wishbone rear suspension handles rough roads and sharp corners with poise and precision. All of these attributes combine to give the 2011 Legacy a flatter cornering profile and a quieter, more comfortable ride over a variety of road surfaces.
